I use my PS4 controller on my PS3 all the time. Just plug it in with a USB cable, and it works perfectly for most games!
You can pair your PS4 controller with your PS3 wirelessly too! Go to 'Accessory Settings' on your PS3, select 'Manage Bluetooth Devices,' and follow the prompts. Note: some features might not work.
I think it's better to stick with the PS3 controller for full compatibility. The PS4 controller might miss some features.
