Don't overthink it, just walk! Your character mimics your movements. For best results, walk in safe, open areas.
I find it works best when you walk in parks or large open spaces. More Pokestops and wild Pokemon tend to spawn in these areas for me.
Just hold your phone, step outside, and start walking! Your in-game character will follow your real-world movements based on GPS.
