No direct messaging? Who needs it when you can show off your skills and awesome gear instead?!
Unfortunately, Splatoon doesn't support direct messaging. But you can express yourself with custom gear and drawings in the game's plaza for others to see.
You can't really write messages in Splatoon, just ink the turf and let your gameplay do the talking. Your splats are worth a thousand words!
