Once you've built a sign, just walk up to it, press 'E' to edit, and you can type whatever you want.
Place a sign by crafting it from the hammer menu, then press 'E' to open the text edit menu and type away!
Just pop a sign down, hit 'E', then type. Boom, done. Go label everything!
Why bother? Just memorize it or use map markers.
