Absolutely not. I watched both and Brotherhood strictly follows the manga, whereas the 2003 series has its own unique story arcs.
Nope, they're not the same! Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) diverges from the manga, while Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood sticks closely to it. Enjoy both!
