Actually, according to various interviews with Hajime Isayama, the creator, he did consider a much darker ending where everyone dies. Luckily, he changed his mind!
Not really. Isayama mentioned in interviews he wanted a darker ending, but that wasn't set in stone. We dodged a bullet!
