After the lunar module's ascent stage completed its primary mission of launching the astronauts back to the command module, it was either sent into lunar orbit where it eventually crashed into the moon or deliberately sent to crash into the lunar surface.

It either crashed back into the moon or floated in lunar orbit until eventually falling out of orbit and crashing.

They didn't keep it; it was left to either orbit the moon or crash land.
