Heard it was a combination of BGP issues and DNS problems. Basically, the internet equivalent of locking yourself out of your house.
Someone at Facebook pressed the wrong button. Oops.
A friend at Facebook mentioned it was because of a routine maintenance task that went haywire. Guess they won't be trying that again soon!
