Nintendo likes to keep us guessing; they probably thought one Sunshine was enough to get our island vibes fix.
Nintendo makes amazing games, but they're also pretty good at leaving us wanting more. Sunshine 2 could still happen though!
People often speculate that the mixed reviews and backlash over the controls and difficulty might have dissuaded Nintendo from making a sequel to Mario Sunshine.
Nintendo never really does direct sequels for their Mario games. They like to innovate and bring fresh ideas to each new title instead.
