Stardew Valley draws heavy inspiration from the Harvest Moon series. The creator, Eric Barone, wanted to address some of the shortcomings he felt were present in Harvest Moon games, adding his own twist to the farm simulation genre.

Actually, Stardew Valley isn't just based on one game. It channels the spirit of Harvest Moon, but also mixes in elements from other classic RPGs and life sims to create its unique vibe. Think of it as Harvest Moon's spiritual successor with a dash of Rune Factory and a sprinkle of Animal Crossing.
