During anaphase I of meiosis, homologous chromosomes are pulled apart by spindle fibers to opposite poles of the cell. It's like a gym class tug-of-war, but with chromosomes!
In anaphase I, the pairs of homologous chromosomes separate and move to opposite ends of the cell. This is what starts reducing the chromosome number by half.
