From my experience, persuading the Hunter not only saved us both from having to repair our ships but also opened up a side quest with some juicy loot!
Persuading the Hunter can lead to a non-combat resolution and might even garner some unexpected allies or rewards. Sometimes talking it out is just as effective as blasting away.
