I'm convinced Hide is a ninja. He always pops up when you least expect it and pulls off some epic save or maneuver.
Hide fakes his own death to protect Kaneki. He eventually returns as a character named Scarecrow, continuing to support Kaneki from the shadows.
Hide's fate is intentionally left ambiguous for a while. But he becomes a key ally in the shadows, staying true to his friendship with Kaneki.
