I've had success with Koopa shells! You can kick them into the P Switch for an easy trigger.
I set up a contraption with falling Bob-ombs to hit the P Switches. It worked and looked awesome too! Give it a try.
A hot take: Forget the items. Just use Mario himself to jump on it!
Thwomps are great for hitting P Switches if you set them up right. They make for some dramatic level designs!
