Honestly, just enjoy the story at first. Get a feel for the combat and crafting systems, because they can get pretty complex. And whatever you do, don't ignore your settlements. They're not just for show; they can be really beneficial.
First thing in Fallout 4? Loot, loot, and more loot! Seriously though, spend some time gathering supplies and materials. You're gonna need everything from duct tape to aluminum cans for crafting. Then, get to know the locals in Sanctuary, and don't skip the Power Armor in Concord. Trust me, it's a game-changer early on. Oh, and save often. You never know when a Deathclaw might decide to crash your party.
Don't bother with the main quest too much early on. Side quests are where it's at. You'll level up faster and find some awesome gear.
Rush to Diamond City. It's the central hub for a lot of quests and has some of the best traders early in the game. Plus, the storyline really picks up from there.
