I'd say 'Scientist' is the way to go. You'll get access to exclusive tech and devices that can give you the upper hand in combat and exploration. Personally, it made my space journey a lot more exciting.
I highly recommend the 'Explorer' trait! You'll get better deals with merchants and find more valuable loot on those distant planets.
Skip all the fancy traits and just go with 'Survivor'. You'll need all the health and stamina you can get when things go south.
