The Legend of Zelda was inspired by Shigeru Miyamoto's childhood adventures exploring caves, forests, and lakes around his hometown in Japan. He wanted to create the same sense of wonder and exploration for players!

Miyamoto was also influenced by fantasy stories and folklore, including elements from J.R.R. Tolkien's works like 'The Lord of the Rings.'

From first-hand experience, Miyamoto's desire to create something that felt like an adventure in your own backyard totally shines through in Zelda's open-world design.
