DroppingSway路7 months agoPokemon cards first hit the scene and became a craze in the late '90s, around 1996 in Japan and then 1998 in the US and other parts of the world. Schools were battlegrounds for trades, and everyone was on the hunt for that elusive Charizard!

It was 1996 when they were released in Japan and pretty much instantaneously became a sensation. The popularity wave hit the US by 1998, and it was like nothing we'd seen before. I remember trading my lunch for a Pikachu because who needs food when you've got electricity, right?
1999 was THE year. Couldn鈥檛 walk two steps without bumping into someone flipping through their binder full of shiny holos.
Hard to pin down an exact year, but late 90s. They鈥檝e been pretty much popular ever since, with ups and downs.
