I got infected after scanning some of the infected creatures around the Safe Shallows – it varies, but keep an eye out for that green tinge!
You'll first notice the Kharaa infection after you reach the Floating Island and interact with the Degasi base. Those green spots are hard to miss!
You get infected pretty early when exploring the environment, usually after coming into contact with infected fauna or flora.
