North in Subnautica is basically the direction you head towards when you're looking at the front side of the Aurora (the crashed ship). Trust me, it helps!
Honestly, just carry a compass. Your life will be so much easier. Plus, you can keep from swimming in circles all day! :P
Pro tip: the Aurora’s front points east. So, with that in mind, you can orient yourself and find North easily.
