I've played and found that while the major companions stick around, some you pick up on your travels might not make it back!

In Starfield, the main four companions—Sarah Morgan, Barrett, Sam Coe, and Andreja—are essential to the story and cannot die. But be careful; some lesser-known NPCs won't have plot armor.
