Simplified mode is usually best for controllers. Realistic is an option too but can be trickier.

If you're using a controller in War Thunder, switch to Simplified or Realistic controls for the best experience!

Expert mode with a controller is a hot mess. Stick to Simplified or Realistic.

I use a controller and Simplified mode works great. Realistic is doable but not as smooth.
