I've faced this issue before and it was because my app was outdated. Update Words with Friends to the latest version and you should be good to go!
Maybe the game servers are down. These things happen occasionally, so give it some time and try again later.
Check your internet connection. Words with Friends needs a solid connection to load properly.
Delete and reinstall the app. It sounds drastic but it's worked for me multiple times when I couldn't access the game.
