Check your internet connection. A weak connection could mess up your split screen because the game can't handle two players smoothly.
Hot take: Split screen is just not stable sometimes. Feels like they're still working out the bugs!
Split screen only works in certain modes like Duos and Squads, so make sure you're not trying to play Solo or Creative. My brother and I learned that the hard way!
