Check your internet connection! Fortnite needs a solid connection to play smoothly. Also, make sure your Xbox Live subscription is active.

Did you try turning it off and on again? Sometimes a simple restart of your Xbox fixes the issue.

I had a similar issue. Clearing the cache on my Xbox did the trick. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds, then unplug it for 30 seconds before restarting.
