I heard the script issues and scheduling conflicts made them pull the plug. Raimi was aiming for a 2011 release, but it just wasn't happening. So they swung towards the reboot instead!

Because they wanted to make The Amazing Spider-Man instead. Simple as that.

Spider-Man 4 got the boot mainly because of creative differences between Sam Raimi (the director) and the studio. Raimi couldn't deliver a script on time that he was happy with, and the studio didn't want to wait. So, they decided to reboot the franchise instead, which gave us Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man!
