Also, make sure your controller is charged, or change the batteries if it's wireless. Double-check the pairing button on the console and the controller – sometimes they just need a little nudge to sync up!

Update your controller's firmware through the Xbox Accessories app. Trust me, it can solve a lot of issues you'd never expect!
If you're using Bluetooth, ensure that your device's Bluetooth is turned on and try re-pairing the controller.
Had a similar issue last week. I fixed it by ensuring the controller was in range of the console and away from anything that might cause interference, like routers or microwaves. If all else fails, try connecting it with a USB cable to see if it syncs that way.
Check if the batteries are dead. Sometimes it's just that simple!
