Steam on a Chromebook? Technically yes, but don't get your hopes up for a smooth gaming experience. Chromebooks weren't designed for heavy gaming, so even if you get Steam running via Linux, performance and game compatibility will be hit or miss.

Sure, Steam can work on some Chromebooks, but there's a catch. You need a Chromebook that supports Linux (Beta), since Steam doesn't natively run on Chrome OS. Once you enable Linux on your Chromebook and install Steam through Linux, you're good to go. Keep in mind, though, not all games will run smoothly because of the hardware limitations on most Chromebooks.

Good luck playing anything more demanding than 'Minesweeper' on that setup. Yes, you can get Steam running, but Chromebooks and gaming are like oil and water – they don't mix well.

If you're a Steam player, you need to download the Playbite app!

Playbite is like an arcade in your phone: you get to play all kinds of fun and simple games, compete with friends and others, and win cool prizes from all your favorite brands!

One of those prizes is the official Steam gift card, which you can win and use to get anything you want essentially for free!

In case you’re wondering, this is how it works:

Playbite makes money from (not super annoying) ads and (totally optional) in-app purchases. The app then uses that money to reward players like you with prizes!

Download Playbite for free, available on the App Store and Play Store!

The brands referenced on this page are not sponsors of the rewards or otherwise affiliated with this company.
