How do you get Gengar in Pokémon Violet?

To catch a Gengar in Pokémon Violet, you can't actually catch it wild in the forest or something; you gotta evolve a Haunter. First, you need to catch a Gastly or Haunter, and then level up Gastly to Haunter if that's what you caught. Next, trade Haunter to a friend because Haunter only evolves into Gengar through trading. Once traded, it'll evolve! Remember, the trade has to be with a real person, so make sure you have someone trustworthy to trade with. After it evolves, hopefully, your friend is nice enough to trade back, and voila, you got yourself a Gengar!

You're overthinking it! Just find someone to trade with. Haunter evolves when traded. Boom, you've got Gengar.

Actually caught my Haunter at night near a spooky-looking area in the game, then just traded with a buddy. Haunter evolves into Gengar immediately after the trade. It was actually pretty easy.
