I tried adding a friend without an active Nintendo Online subscription, and it was a no-go. Learned the hard way that both players definitely need that subscription active to connect.

Adding friends in Pokemon Violet is super easy and makes the adventure even more fun! First, both players need to be on their Nintendo Switch and have an active Nintendo Online subscription. Then, from the game's main menu, select the 'Poke Portal' option, go to 'Link Trades', and choose 'Set Link Code'. You and your friend should decide on a unique 8-digit code and enter it. Once you both enter the same code, you'll connect and can add each other as friends in the game!
