I tried changing it mid-game once... didn't work. Do it from the inventory screen before the game or during warm-up for best results!

Easy peasy! To change your starting pistol in CS:GO, just hit up your inventory before the match starts. Look for the 'Loadout' section, then navigate to the 'Pistols' category. Here you can swap out your default pistol for any other pistol you have in your inventory. Remember, you can only do this before the match begins, so make your choice count!
