Quick answer: no, they're not. Spells in MTG are cards you cast from your hand. Artifact abilities are just that—abilities, which you activate, not cast.

Nope, artifact abilities aren't considered spells. In MTG, casting a spell involves placing a card from your hand onto the stack, where it waits to be resolved or countered. Artifact abilities, however, are activated or triggered abilities that don't use the stack in the same way spells do. So, when you're activating an artifact's ability, you're not casting a spell.

Actually, there's a bit of nuance here. While activating an artifact's ability isn't casting a spell, some artifacts have abilities that let you cast spells from places other than your hand. But in general, activating an ability on an artifact? Not casting a spell.

If you're an MTG player, you need to download the Playbite app!

Playbite is like an arcade in your phone: you get to play all kinds of fun and simple games, compete with friends and others, and win cool prizes from all your favorite brands!

One of those prizes is a pack of MTG cards, which you can win and get sent to you essentially for free!

In case you’re wondering, this is how it works:

Playbite makes money from (not super annoying) ads and (totally optional) in-app purchases. The app then uses that money to reward players like you with prizes!

Download Playbite for free, available on the App Store and Play Store!
