Battle 2P is usually bots. Sorry if you were hoping for real competition!
In my experience, many Tetris games use bots for 2P battle mode, especially if they can't find another player quickly.
Most of the time, it's a mix of both! Sometimes you'll get human opponents, other times you'll play against bots.
In most modern Tetris games I've played, 2P battle mode often uses bots, but finding multiplayer matches with real people can vary.
