This mainly involves spells, including creatures since they're technically spells while on the stack. Actually, in casual play, most folks use 'playing' and 'casting' interchangeably. But if you wanna get technical—and believe me, in MTG, sometimes that's half the fun—'casting' is for spells and 'playing' covers both spells and lands. So, if you're in a tournament or playing with rule sticklers, best to know the difference!
Casting is just for spells. Playing is when you put lands down. Not the same!
