The specials are awesome! If you're a fan of the main series, the extras give you more backstory and character depth. Plus, the action scenes are just as epic!
The specials can be hit or miss, but as a die-hard SAO fan, I enjoyed them. They add a lot of extra flavor to the series.
Honestly, the specials are just okay. If you're super into SAO, you'll probably enjoy them, but they aren't essential viewing in my opinion.
