Are you always part of the Minutemen in Fallout 4?
Nope, in Fallout 4, joining the Minutemen is totally up to you. While they're one of the first factions you encounter and can offer a good starting point for your adventures in the Commonwealth, it's not a must. You can choose to ignore their calls for help and focus on exploring, joining other factions, or just wandering the wasteland solo. The game gives you the freedom to align with multiple factions up to certain points in the storyline, so feel free to mix and match based on your play style!

Yes and no. While you're not required to join the Minutemen, the game kinda nudges you towards them early on. But, if you're like me and prefer to chart your own path, you can absolutely give Preston Garvey the cold shoulder and explore the Commonwealth on your own terms.
Actually, you're not forced at all. I ignored them completely on my second playthrough to see how much it would change the game. Turns out, you can still have a blast without ever helping Preston and his crew. Plus, it lets you avoid getting bogged down with all those settlement requests.
