Absolutely, your companions in Fallout 4 can use any weapon you give them! Just make sure to also provide them with some ammo. Interestingly, they only need one unit of ammo, except for when using the Minigun, which needs more. Watching Dogmeat wield a minigun is something you won't forget!

Hot take: It's all fun and games until you give a companion a powerful weapon and they start missing every shot. Yes, they can use any weapon, but maybe stick to giving them something that won't waste your precious ammo.
From experience, giving your companion a better weapon makes a HUGE difference. I handed Piper a sniper rifle and suddenly she's picking off enemies left and right. Just remember to give them one round of ammo (or more for heavy weapons)!
