So the deal with workshops in Fallout 76 is kinda like me trying to cook a fancy dinner. They start with potential, but without your intervention, it's gonna go south. Basically, workshops CAN defend themselves to an extent with whatever turrets and traps you've set up. But, when the big, bad enemies come knocking, you'll wanna jump in to save your hard-earned resources. It's like setting up your home defense and then realizing you're the only one who knows how to work the security system.

Lol, no. Workshops need you, buddy. They're like needy plants.

Workshops in Fallout 76 automatically defending themselves is like asking if my dog can do my taxes. Sure, I've taught him some neat tricks, and those defenses you set up might fend off a few waves of low-level mobs. But for the real heavy lifting? You gotta be there, chief. So, pull up your Power Armor and get ready to defend what's yours!

Actually, if you set up your defenses right and pick your workshop location wisely, you might not have to babysit them 24/7. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt and the resources.
