As someone who tried this recently, I can confirm you need Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass to download games like Dark Souls. Xbox Live Free won't cut it.

Nope! Xbox Live Silver (now called Xbox Live Free) doesn't let you download games. You'll need Xbox Live Gold or Game Pass to get your Dark Souls fix.
