Yes, but it depends on the model of your PS3. The original 'fat' PS3 models are backward compatible with PS2 games, while later 'slim' and 'super slim' models are not.

I've got a 'fat' PS3 and still play my favorite PS2 games on it. Make sure yours is an early model!

Not all PS3s can. Only the older, chunkier ones support PS2 games.
