Protip: You can't technically 'take' a Protectron to keep forever, but hacking one to give you a hand in battles? Totally doable.

No, and why would you? Dogmeat is the ultimate companion. Protectrons can't compete with that charisma!

Nope, you can't have a Protectron as a personal companion or pet in Fallout 4, sadly. But, you can definitely hack some to fight by your side temporarily with the Robotics Expert perk! It's just not a long-term buddy situation.
