Sometimes friends won't appear if they鈥檙e not in the same platform environment (iOS vs Android). Make sure you鈥檙e playing on compatible devices!

I had the same problem! I found my friend by going to the Town Hall, clicking on the 'Friends' tab, and searching their username directly. Good luck!
