Only the original 60GB and 20GB models of the PS3 had backward compatibility for PS2 games. The PS3 Slim doesn't support them. Bummer, I know!

I've got a PS3 Slim and can confirm it won't play PS2 games. Tried it, failed it. :(

Nope, PS3 Slim doesn't play PS2 games. Time to dust off that old PS2 for some nostalgia!
