Only the original 80GB PS3 models and some specific early models with hardware-based backward compatibility can play PS2 games. Check the model number to be sure!
If you've got the 80GB model that came out in 2007, you're in luck! It has backward compatibility with PS2 games. Later models? Not so much.
My 80GB PS3 could play PS2 games, but it was one of the early models. Not all can do it, so double-check!
