Yep, Xbox 360 can play a bunch of original Xbox games, but not all of them. Microsoft made a list of compatible games, so check it out to see if your faves are on there!
From what I remember, many original Xbox games run fine on the 360, but you'll need an official Microsoft hard drive. I played Halo 1 on my 360 for hours!
