You can only connect a PS3 to a computer monitor, not directly to a computer.

I've done this myself! The trick is using an HDMI capture device. Plug the PS3 into the capture card and then the capture card into your PC. Software like Elgato Game Capture or OBS makes it pretty easy to get everything up and running.
