Nope, you can't play the actual story mode of GTA 5 online. Story mode and online are like apples and oranges – both in the same game but offering different experiences. In story mode, you're following the lives of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor in a single-player experience. Online mode, however, lets you create your own character and engage with other players in missions, races, and heists in a shared world. So, while you can't play the story mode in GTA 5 online, there's plenty of adventures to be had in both modes!
Actually, thinking about it, GTA Online kinda feels like a story mode with the amount of content, missions, and narrative stuff it has. So, while it's not the story mode, it's got its own vast storyline.
