Nope, once you start a game on Nightmare difficulty, you’re stuck with it! You’ll need to start a new community on a different difficulty if you want a break from the pain.

Yeah, unfortunately, you can't just turn off Nightmare mode mid-game. You'd have to start a new game on an easier difficulty to escape the madness.
