Nope, the OG Super Smash Bros. on the N64 was strictly offline. Brawl on the Wii was the first to go online.

Super Smash Bros didn鈥檛 have online multiplayer until Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Wii. Classic couch co-op or bust!

Confirming: first Super Smash Bros. with online play was Brawl on the Wii. N64, GameCube versions were local only.

N64 and Melee (GameCube) had no online play, but Brawl for Wii changed the game (literally).
