They provide small stat boosts that can be handy early on. I chose medical technician and it made healing a bit easier!
Honestly, aptitudes are more about role-playing and flavor. They don't make a huge impact on gameplay, so just have fun with it.
Aptitudes don't really matter. You won't notice much difference between them.
